Vuno village, Albania!

Vuno is a village in the municipality of Himara, Albania. It is located along the road between the municipal centre of Himara and the village of Dhermi on the Albanian Riviera.

It is said that due to the situation of the village in the hills, which climb about 300 metres, the name of the village is derived from the Greek word Vouno (Greek: Βουνό), which means “mountain”.

Vuno has a very complicated history regarding the numerous invasions of the Greeks, and the abolition of the Greek language and schools in this village occupied for a long time with them. After the successive invasions, Albania managed to have a part of it and the first language was Albanian in schools.

The village has many churches, it is a small traditional village. The village of Vuno is mainly inhabited by Albanian-speaking Eastern Orthodox Christians. Vuno has a 14th century church, located on the beach of Jale, in the Venetian architectural style. He also has other important ones, dedicated to the Church of Saint Spyridon (1778) and that of Saint Mary (1783), which are relatively well preserved.

Local legend says that the inhabitants of the village are from the city of Shkodra and moved to Vuno, where they built the church of Saint Mary. The church is still well preserved at a prominent point in the village, called Scutaro.

The beaches of Vuno together with those of Himara represent the main tourist attraction of the municipality during the summer months.
